OKLAHOMA JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL RODEO
ASSOCIATION
Oklahoma is a charter member of the Wrangler Division of the National
High School Rodeo Association. We are a nonprofit organization
incorporated within the State of Oklahoma. The aim of our organization,
along with the NHSRA is “The Development of Sportsmanship, Horsemanship,
and Character in the Youth of Our Country”.
OJHSRA is a state wide organization, open to any 6th, 7th or 8th grade
student who meets the grade and conduct requirements of the National and
State Organizations. Our rodeo year consists of a fall and spring
season, with rodeos on four weekends each season – 2 rodeos each
weekend. Our events are at several different locations – from McAlester
to Checotah to Woodward to Lawton to Cherokee. This past 2008-09 rodeo
season, we had 90 members and anticipate continuing growth with each
year.
Our organization, led by our board of directors, continues to improve
the status of our association by acquiring new and different locations
for rodeos and adding to our awards and prizes given throughout the year
as well as at the end of our season. And of course, our contestants
strive to attain a position on the OJHSRA National Team that represents
our state at the Wrangler Division National Finals Rodeo in Gallup, NM.
After competing at the first Junior High Finals in 2005, Oklahoma
brought home the national pole bending champion, the national girls
breakaway champion, reserve national champion boys breakaway roper & the
all around and reserve all around cowgirl honors and won the girls
national team championship. In 2006 we had the national champion girls
goat tyer. In 2007, Oklahoma had reserve national champion boys and
girls teams as well as reserve national champion over all team. In 2008
we brought home the coveted NATIONAL CHAMPION OVERALL TEAM TROPHY as
well as National Champion Girls Team, Rsv. National Champion Boys Team,
National Champion All Around Cowgirls & National Champion Tie Down Calf
Roper. Oklahoma has had a national student officer every year since the
inception of the Wrangler Division. We again have the national student
vice president for the 2008-2009 season. We are very proud of our kids
and their accomplishments.
As you can see, Oklahoma Wrangler Division has a tradition of
competitive membership and we would be pleased to have you join our
“winning ways”!
